It is now a new year and I have a new grade level. Second grade! I am loving it. My students are so wonderful. We have been busy during this first quarter.

Science Fair
Big shout-out to Parkridge Medical Center for hosting our second annual Science Fair! There were 12 booth total, along with the ambulance outside, for our 3-5 grade students to learn all about their bodies and the health care industry.
Booth #1 Medical Laboratory Professionals
Study of blood parasites and diseases
Booth #2 Germs
Students learn the proper way to apply hand sanitizer to effectively eradicate germs.
Students practiced making healthy choices with what they put on their plate.
Booth #4 Fats and Sugars
By far the most disgusting booth, and the most informative. Students received a visual as to how much fats and sugars can be found in their meals and candy.
The different vials contain sugar in the gram amounts that is found in cereals, drinks, and other popular foods.
Booth #6 Blood Pressure
Parkridge made sure to not test the teachers, only the students. :)
Booth #7 Cardiovascular
Students learned about the functions of the heart, the different chambers, and looked at an Echocardiogram of a heartbeat.
Booth # 10 Life Cycle
Booth #12 Career in Healthcare
The presenters taught about the different career available in the health care industry and what each student needed to do while in elementary school to achieve that career goal.

Booth #5 Heart Rate
Students learned how to track their resting and accelerated heart rates.
If you look at the Food Guide Pyramid closely, you'll see that on the side there is a person climbing a staircase. This is to remind us that eating right is nothing without physical exercise. Get up, get out, and exercise!Booth #6 Blood Pressure

Dissolving Solids
Today in class, we conducted a science experiment in which we documented any physical and chemical changes involving varies solids and liquids.
For the solids, we used confectioners sugar, baby powder, and table salt.
For liquids, we used water with food coloring, vinegar, and vegetable oil.
Click here to watch a video on the introduction to the experiment.
The second video shows how I had the students set up their lab area at their desks.
The subsequent videos go in order of how we performed the experiments. Students were to document their findings after every combination of substances.
If you would like a copy of the data chart that we used in class, you can download it {HERE}
